First Lady Jewels

As we approach President’s day I thought it would be fun to reflect on jewelry worn by some of our First Ladies.

Michelle Obama has such beautiful fashion sense. Always graceful and not afraid to go bold.

Pearls have always been a favorite of our First Ladies as well. I’m definitely a fan!

Whether it’s a single strand or bold and beautiful multi-strands pearls are timeless and always in fashion.

Everyday people elevated to celebrities and yet just like us. These ladies are watched, scrutinized, and judged for everything they do. Setting trends merely by selecting clothing or jewelry puts another layer of pressure on them as America’s first lady. It’s smart to remember they are strong, independent women who enhance their beauty by selecting pieces that make them confident and help them shine. Don’t be afraid to make your own statement!

Garnet – a rainbow of colors

When I hear the word garnet I think of the deep red or burgundy color that aligns with the month of January. Garnet is the birthstone of January and is best known for it’s rich, red hues. I was surprised to find out that this gemstone comes in a variety of colors based on its mineral makeup.

A gift of garnet symbolizes friendship and trust. The Capricorn in your life will treasure their birthstone in any of the gemstone varieties.

Escape Winter on Sanibel Island

Escape your winter blues on the sunny beaches of Sanibel Island off the coast of Florida. I wish I could head there and leave these dreary days behind. Sanibel Island is accessed by a 3 mile long causeway. This causeway spans San Carlos Bay and takes you to an island that is designed for relaxation.

Timing is Everything for Shell Collecting on Sanibel

Low-tide is your best bet for shell hunting anywhere on Sanibel Island. Regardless of what beach you decide to visit, more beach area opens up at lower tides. Low-tide also exposes more shells that may have washed in with the fast currents in the area. During both the late autumn season as well as throughout winter, tides on Sanibel are more extreme, thus bringing in and exposing more shells. The more dramatic a low tide is, the better. Make sure you research when low-tide will occur before visiting Sanibel so you can maximize your shell hunting experience.

The best time to collect shells on Sanibel is 1 1/2 hours before and after low tide. The best days for shell hunting fall on full moons and new moons.

The Healing Powers of Howlite

Discovered by the Canadian geologist, Henry How, in the 19th century this gemstone is scientifically known as calcium borosilicate hydroxide. It is often called the “white buffalo stone” and in its pure form it is a dense white or light gray color.

howlite It’s a gemstone, which also has some dark gray or black colored stripes like that of a spiders’ web.  Howlite imitates the shape of the head of a cauliflower.

“Some of the howlite gemstones feature translucent crystals on top of the nodules making it easy to absorb dyes well. This explains why howlite can easily mimic turquoise. In current years, many people make use of this attribute to emulate lapis lazuli, red coral, and other minerals. Moreover, howlite has been considered a perfect substitute stone for turquoise. Many native American jewelry styles are incorporated with the use of the howlite stone instead of the traditional gems. This particular procedure has become popular knowing that pieces made from howlite is less expensive than those made from the original turquoise, lapis, and red coral.”

Howlite Cross

Both the “Howlite Cross” and “Stone Cross” (pictured here) are handcrafted necklaces using this calming stone and are available at

It is said that howlite is a healing gemstone. It can increase patience, concentration, focus, and cure insomnia.

“Howlite is a great tool to have during meditation because it can help you focus your mind. It can promote serenity of mind and remove any kind of distracting thought.

It will help you get rid of your stress and anxiety because Howlite is also a powerful calming stone.”

Ruby Red – forever in our hearts!

The ruby is the birthstone for July. Like the heat of July this gemstone is a fiery red, or a variation of it. It’s rich color brings to thought love and passion. Throughout history this gemstone was thought to have powers, was used for healing, and was worn by royalty to guard against evil.

ruby“It is a variety of the mineral Corundum, and is found as crystals within metamorphic rock.  Corundum is the second hardest mineral, after Diamond.”

ruby worry beads

Worry beads have several uses in Greek culture, including:[3]

  • relaxation, enjoyment, and generally passing the time
  • as an amulet, to guard against bad luck
  • used by people who wish to limit smoking
  • as a mark of power and social prestige. This is especially true in the case of expensive worry beads made of silver or amber.

Whether used in jewelry, soap (like pictured below), or various other products the bright ruby red is an enduring gem emulated in a variety of ways.

“Violent Serenade”

The violin is an elegant instrument that most have heard at one point or another. I recently had the chance to attend an elementary Christmas performance at a local school. They had a charming string choir that made me smiles as the sometime screeching strings worked their way through “Mary had a Little Lamb” and a couple other simple songs. The parents of these children are to be commended, because practice time at home can’t be all that easy.

“The violin, so deceptively simple, can both portray and inspire every emotion imaginable, imitating the braying of a donkey or delivering a tune of heart-rendering beauty.”
-Toby Faber from “Stradivari’s Genius: Five Violins, One Cello, and Three Centuries of Enduring Perfection.

The piece I bring you today is the creation of Bobby Johnston and is called “Violent Serenade”.  This explosion of art and beauty was Bobby’s vision of that raucous serenade that this violin may have been witness to in it’s past.

Grandfather TimeWell I’ve expanded my footprint with a web site. “” will be the main hub with the link to the blog as one of the pages.

It seems to show up different when you look at it on a computer v. a mobile device. For some reason it is keeping one of the template photos when you look at it on a cell phone.

The piece I have shown here is Grandfather Time and is still available at

I absolutely love it and would love to see someone add it to their collection!

Another feature on the web site will be a “dog a day”. I will be highlighting shelter dogs looking for their forever homes. I will make sure and pick pets from across the United States, so no matter where you’re viewing the page from you might find a spot light pet in your area. There are so many great rescue groups, shelters, and other organizations trying to help find these lost souls a home. Make sure you do your part and spay/neuter your pet to help with the overpopulation problem.

This is Clancy, our first dog of the day. He is a really cool looking standard poodle! He is 2 years old and loves people. He is located in Nebraska at the Good Dog Rescue near Lincoln, NE. They are always looking for families interested in fostering as well.

Please use the link below if you have questions about Clancy or any of their other available dogs.
